In his 400th career race, five-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson reminded everybody that maybe he should still be in the headlines by winning his second Daytona 500. Johnson only led 17 total laps, but they came in a late timely surge. His best lap in the restrictor-plate race was 199.495 mph.
Johnson was able to hold off Danica Patrick, who made history by being the first woman to start at the top of the pole at the Daytona 500. She was also the first woman to lead a green-flagged lap in the Daytona 500 and earned the highest place a woman has ever accomplished at the Daytona 500 at 8th. It looked as though she were going to get a top-five finish, however a huge push by Dale Earnhardt Jr., combined with Patrick's stagnant strategy, forced her down the line. Earnhardt Jr. finished second for the second consecutive time in Daytona. Fifty-four-year-old Mark Martin also put on a tremendous race by coming in at third.
