Robbie Rogers—a former U.S. men's national soccer team member who was released by the Leeds United A.F.C. club recently—revealed that he is gay today. And, in the process, he became one of the most prominent athletes in the U.S. to make the admission. In a blog that he posted to his website, Rogers talked about how he has used soccer to hide his sexuality.

"I always thought I could hide this secret," he wrote. "Football was an escape, my purpose, my identity. Football hid my secret, gave me more joy than I could have ever imagined."

After making the announcement, Rogers also revealed that he will be stepping away from the game of soccer—at least, for now.

"Now is my time to step away," he said. "It's time to discover myself away from football."
