Team USA Struggles to Find Form in New BMW Bobsleds

Sometimes you must lose before you win.

Announced in November, Team USA's new BMW-designed two-man bobsled has finally made its debut—pushing the team to a 14th place finish at FIBT World Cup in Igls, Austria. Its the first new sled for the team in 20 years, and may still need some adjustment. A narrow entry has proved difficult, despite the clear advantage in aerodynamics.

Against the challenge of the new rig, Team USA remains positive. Steven Holcomb, who is a member of the two-man team, said, “I don’t know any sled project that comes out of the box and wins, so we knew we might have to lose before we can win.”

The sled, with Holcomb and teammate Curt Tomasevicz, will be back at it next week in St. Moriz, Switzerland.
