Being a rural farmer can be lonely. Loneliness, certainly, has potential to breed unwanted depression. Taking this into account, Kerry County, Ireland has raised the legal blood alcohol level from .05 to .07.
While Ireland's Minister of Transportation Leo Varadkar admits the ruling conveys the wrong message about Ireland, local politician Danny Healy-Rae—himself a pub owner—believes differently: "[Many farmers] end up at home looking at the four walls, night in and night out, because they don't want to take the risk of losing their license."
The law is exclusive to rural areas, where another option mulled was to limit tipsy drivers to 30mph.
To put the legal level in context, the new law essentially allows for 3 pints in an evening.
