Retired Formula One driver David Piper recently allowed freelance automotive journalist Mark Hales to take his Porsche 917 for a spin on a test track, only to have the prized race car returned with an exploded engine. Piper is now suing Hales, who happens to be an experienced driver himself, for the cost of damages totaling $174,000. The two men apparently made an informal agreement that if any damage was caused due to the vehicle's malfunction Hales wouldn't be held liable. However Piper claims that the 917's engine exploded due to Hales' failure to engage the right gear and "over-revving," reportedly telling the London court's "If you bend it, you mend it."
