Ozzie Smith is one of the greatest shortstops to ever play the game of baseball. But, unfortunately, he no longer has the hardware to back it up.

Over the weekend, SCP Auctions auctioned off all 13 of the Gold Glove trophies that the former Cardinals great won between 1980 and 1992. We're not sure if Smith is hard up for money right now or if this was really part of some strategic "estate planning" like he said it was back in October when he announced that he was auctioning off his Gold Glove trophies. But, either way, the trophies fetched $519,203 at auction. Additionally, he also sold his 2011 St. Louis Cardinals World Series ring for $51,364 and his 2006 St. Louis Cardinals World Series ring for $42,448.

We're glad he got some decent money for his stuff. But, like we said, it's unfortunate that one of greatest shortstops ever no longer has the hardware to back it up. And, we just hope that he sold his trophies because he wanted to and not because he had to...
