For the first time ever, Ford turbocharged a factory-built drag racing Mustang. The 2012 Cobra Jet Twin-Turbo Concept's 5.0-liter V8 was fitted with two Borg Warner EFR turbos, quite a difference from the 7.0-liter V8 engines used when the Cobra Jet debuted back in '68.
"To overcome the biggest perceived drawback of turbocharging – the lag – we’ve selected the smallest possible turbos that will give us the airflow we need," said Dave Born, Ford turbocharger design engineer. "We’ve also got some other enhancements to help improve the responsiveness; we have very low inertia and very low internal friction."
The new Cobra Jet is only a concept right now, and, thus, is still a work in progress, as the Ford engineers continue to tune this beast to perfection.
