China is Building an Eco-Friendly Car-Free City

The satellite Chengdu Tianfu District Great City is expected to help relieve the overburdened infrastructure of China's major urban centers.

The firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture has recently submitted plans for an eco-friendly, self-sustaining satellite city to be built outside of the Chengdu district of China. The 1.3-square-kilometer Chengdu Tianfu District Great City was conceived as a solution to the problem of overburdened city centers across China and will cut carbon emissions and energy consumption by creating a city devoid of cars. While a city without cars actually just sounds like a nightmare to us, the plans will use 48% less energy, 58% less water, produce 89% less landfill waste, and generate 60% less carbon dioxide than a development with the same size population.
