The Netherlands is paving the way to the future of highway travel with this innovative prototype for a "Smart Highway" from designer Daan Roosegaarde and the engineering company Heijmans Infrastructure. The "Smart Highway" prototype features a list of futuristic functions including glow-in-the-dark roads that charge in the daylight and glow for up to 10 hours in the night, and dynamic painted symbols that appear in relevant weather conditions. Selected as the Best Future Concept by the Dutch Design Awards, the "Smart Highway" prototype will be be in use in the Netherlands by 2013.
