The 25 Greatest Sports Careers Ruined by Injury

7. Sandy Koufax

Sport: Baseball
Years Active: 1955-1966
Career Stats: 165 W 2.76 ERA 2396 K
Injury: Arthritic elbow

Koufax struggled during the first six years of his career going 36-40. He tried to strike every batter out and didn't trust his defense. After a convo with a teammate in 1961, Koufax started to pitch with more control which resulted in a six-year run of dominance. He won three Cy Youngs and five championships. Little did people know, Koufax played in pain the last couple years of his career, even waking up with his entire left arm being black and blue.

He eventually developed arthritis and was told if he kept pitching he'll lose use of his arm. This quote from Yogi Berra says it all, "I can see how he won 25 games. What I don't understand is how he lost five." The Left Hand of God" is the youngest player to be enshrined in Cooperstown.
