Mark Cuban is a guy who is (obviously!) about his paper. He knows how to crunch numbers remarkably well, and he's a billionaire as a result of it. But, regardless of the financial implications, he sounds absolutely crazy right now when he talks about the Mavericks missing out on signing Deron Williams over the summer.
At a news conference that the Mavs held yesterday to introduce new players like O.J. Mayo, Chris Kaman, and Dahntay Jones to their season ticket holders (YAY! Right, guys?!), Cuban got up and reiterated a point that he's been making about D-Will ever since Dallas lost out to the Brooklyn Nets in the D-Will sweepstakes. Specifically, he said that he's glad that the Mavs didn't sign Williams, because he feels as though it would have strapped the team financially for years to come.
"No disrespect to Deron," he said, "but sometimes, from a team perspective, the best deals are the ones you don't get done. We would have made it work with Deron. But, I think it's better for our team the way it turned out."
"Would have made it work"? Riiiiiiight. We know that Cubes has a point as far as the NBA salary cap is concerned. But, bringing that point up over and over and over (and over!) again doesn't make him look smart. It makes him look bitter. Time to let it go.
