IEEE Predicts 75 Percent of Cars Will Be Self-Driving by 2040

Taking the fun out of road trips.

There's no question that self-driving cars are going to hit the road in the near future, but does that mean that there will no longer be a need for driver's licenses? That's exactly what it means, if you ask the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

“People do not need a license to sit on a train or a bus,” said director of the IEEE’s Center for Intelligent Systems Research Azim Eskandarian. “In a full-autonomy case in which no driver intervention will be allowed, the car will be operating. So there will not be any special requirements for drivers or occupants to use the vehicle as a form of transportation.”

The IEEE's most recent study also predicts that 75 percent of cars on the road in 2040 will be autonomous. We don't know about you, but we'll never be letting a car do all of the work for us. You know, because we actually enjoy driving.
