These are notes from the first basketball game ever, written by Dr. James Naismith, himself. His granddaughter, Helen Carpenter, found the original 13 rules of basketball along with the notes pictured above and auctioned them off a few years ago. The 13 original rules were sold for $4.3 million in 2010 and the notes were auctioned off for $71,700 in 2006. The auction site has transcribed all seven pages of the notes with the first two available to read. Dr. Naismith talks of his worries of being able to get the students to pay attention to the new game. He also speaks of the 10 foot baskets at each end of the gym and the 13 rules he posted on the bulletin board, among other things.

The original rules will be featured in an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on how they made their way back to Kansas. The doc will premiere on October 16, check out the trailer here.
