The NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority has recently announced plans to begin selling advertising space on the front of MetroCards. The ads will appear in any color and won't necessarily feature the MTA's logo, with the only portion off-limits being the black magnetic strip and the message at the bottom instructing cardholders as to which direction to swipe their card. The back of the cards have been used to sell advertising at various times since 1995, with the front having remained untouched since 1997, when the gold MetroCard was first introduced.
