Aren't the Olympics supposed to be about the whole world coming together, getting along, and competing in sports? One Lithuanian basketball fan must have missed the memo.
According to the London Evening Standard, he was arrested during Lithuania's game against Nigeria earlier this week after undercover members of Scotland Yard saw him starting racist "monkey chants" during the game. And, it gets worse, too. Apparently, another Lithuanian fan was seen making Nazi salutes at a pair of black stewardesses a couple days before the most recent incident (see him in the photo above?). He's not the same man who was arrested, but Scotland Yard is now keeping an eye out for any kind of racism exhibited during the Olympic Games.
"Officers within the basketball area arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public-order offense," a Scotland Yard spokesman said. "This was the result of a pro-active operation by officers from the Met and stewards following concerns raised by members of the public as to the conduct of a small element of the crowd at a previous event."
SMH. Can't we all just get along? If not for, well, forever, then how about just for two weeks at the Olympics? Is that really too much to ask?
