Back in 2011 a physicist by the name of Thomas Senkel made an appearance in the video below, confusing the hell out of the Internet with a ridiculous "volocopter" that looked like a cross between a bunch of Dremel tools, a build-your-own hillbilly helicopter, and some sort of strange Saw torture device. Almost a year later, Senkel and start-up e-volo have revealed new plans to make the concept a reality. Instead of sitting on top of the device, like in the video, the new all-electric prototype has an actual cabin underneath the 18 rotors that keep it afloat. The idea is much more energy and power efficient and is much more safe.
