If you've got a 2001-2004 Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute (the two vehicles were jointly developed), please set your keys down, call a tow company and have your car taken to the nearest dealership. Withe the newest news from Ford about the possibility of throttles sticking open, your vehicle is not safe to drive.
"Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed (cruise) control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed," the NHTSA explained.
Ford is recalling 484,600 Escape SUVs, 423,634 in America, because of the hazard. The announcement comes only a week after Ford recalled 11,500 2013 Escapes with 1.6-liter EcoBoost engines due to a fire risk. The lesson we're quickly learning here: Stay away from Escapes for a while.
