The cutting-edge BMW i8 Spyder stole the show at the 11th annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards, taking the overall achievement of 2012 Concept Vehicle of the Year. Beating out 34 other concepts that made their debuts thorughout this year's North American auto show circuit, the i8 was considered the most likely to shape the future of the automobile industry.

"The i8 concept wraps innovative construction and powertrain technologies in a functional, eye-catching new design language that will be exclusive to the upcoming eco sub-brand it previews," said Juror Chris Poole. "It's an impressive blend of supercar style and speed with future-oriented mpg and emissions performance.”

As progress continues, will BMW become the production leader for electric supercars? It appears that way.
