With 26 outs on the scoreboard, Astros pinch-hitter Jason Castro drilled a grounder to third base. Giants third basemen Joaquin Arias scooped it up, collected his feet and fired the final strike of the game to first basemen Brandon Belt. The 27th out secured Matt Cain's perfect game, the first perfect game in the San Francisco Giants' 130-year history. Cain had full control the entire game with 14 strikeouts, tied for most in a perfect game, in a 10-0 victory over the Houston Astros.
Although he was able to pitch comfortably after the Giants scored seven runs in the first three innings, the stadium's electric crowd ran through him as he mounted a total of 125 pitches, 86 of which were for strikes. When asked how he handled his emotions, he had a simple answer: "I have no idea." The win puts Cain at 8-2 on the season, lowered his ERA to 2.14 and drops his WHIP to an absolutely absurd 0.85. This was the league's second perfect game of the year after White Sox pitcher Phil Humber threw one earlier in the season.
