Up until five minutes remaining, this game was completely out of reach for Kansas. Nobody believed the Jayhawks could win, and it seemed as if they were beginning to believe it too. With high energy and stifling defense, Kentucky jumped out to an 18-point lead, living up to the hype as the most gifted squad in the nation. But 27 percent shooting from the Wildcats in the second half let Kansas creep back, coming within five late. After a couple scares, some turnovers, and some made free throws, it didn't matter as Doron Lamb scored 22 points and Kentucky won its eighth National Championship and its first since 1998 by a score of 67-59.
The 'ship was coach John Calipari's first, and it looks as though he will have coached three of the past five No. 1 picks in John Wall, Derrick Rose, and soon Anthony Davis. Davis struggled mightily from the field at 1-10, but his presence was largely felt elsewhere grabbing 16 rebounds, 6 blocks, 5 assists, and 3 steals. For once, the most talented basketball team in the country actually won the title.
