Bike Dock Solutions, provider of secure cycle parking equipment and accessories in the UK, recently set up a hidden camera to record a series of staged bike thefts at a busy market in London. The footage shows that it can take almost three minutes for people to realize what's happened, and that up to 15 people could pass without saying or doing anything about it.
Sure, its isn't news that people won't generally go out of their way to stop a totally non-violent crime that doesn't involve them directly, but you'd think that walking around with a giant bolt cutter looking for bikes to clip, in broad daylight no less, just wouldn't be this easy. The lesson here seems to be never lock your bike up where you can't see it for too long.
