The Worldwide Leader in Sports has already issued an apology for publishing the headline "Chink in the Armor" on mobile applications following the New York Knicks 89-85 loss to the New Orleans Hornets. The headline went up on apps such as the ESPN Scorecenter for about 35 minutes early this morning before it was taken down. Whether or not the headline was an intentional racist remark or a huge unfortunate lapse in judgement is unclear, but the response has been resoundingly negative.
ESPN called the headline offensive and said it was "conducting a complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures and are determining appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again. We regret and apologize for this mistake."
Unfortunately, it already has happened again. This isn't the first time that ESPN has been in trouble for this exact phrase. The third picture above shows the same headline used during the 2008 Summer Olymipcs in Beijing regarding the U.S. basketball team. With the the numerous nicknames and puns referring to and using Jeremy Lin's name, this was certainly one that is not acceptable.
