Kevin Love could have been the Minnesota Timberwolves' "designated player." He wanted to be the Timberwolves "designated player." He wanted a five-year vote of confidence and dedication from the last place team in the Northwest Division. The T-Wolves saw things differently and gave Love a four-year, $62 million deal with a fourth-year player option instead.
"I like the direction the team is headed," Love said. "I like the youth. I like the pieces, like we're knocking at the door and we're close in a lot of games. ... I was willing to make a commitment for five years. They thought otherwise. I'm glad this is out of the way."
If you couldn't tell, once the Wolves wouldn't give Love what he wanted, he made sure he had the ability to opt-out later in the deal. We're not exactly sure why Minnesota is hesitating. Last season, Love became the first player since Moses Malone to average 20 points and 15 rebounds, had a 30-30 game, and had a record-setting double-double streak. He's even proven this year that he loves the city's fans. What more persuasion does the front office need?
