Tim Leiweke, the president of the Anschutz Entertainment Group that owns the Los Angeles Galaxy said it was the biggest night in Major League Soccer's 16-year history. He might be right.
Over 30,000 stuffed into the Home Depot Center in L.A. to watch some of the league's, and the world's, biggest stars battle for the championship. After the scoreboard remained stuck on 0-0 for a majority of the game, Landon Donovan did what he does best. With a quick flick of his right foot, Donovan's shot in the 72nd minute tipped Houston Dynamo keeper Tally Hall's fingers and trickled into the back corner of the net for the only goal of the final.
It was a picture-perfect moment, as David Beckham's header to Robbie Keane set up the winning goal, a culmination and vindication of sorts for the high-spending Galaxy. The best players on the league's best team finished strong after numerous chances throughout the match came and went without success. Donovan, who was named the MLS Cup MVP, revealed to the press after the game that Beckham had been playing with a strained hamstring.
Finally able to quiet some of his doubters, Beckham displayed the precise skill set that earned him a five-year contract back in 2007. A contract that came to an end with the worldwide star hoisting a trophy in his third different league.
