The U.S. Government Wants to Ban Chewing Tobacco From This Year's World Series

Seriously, guys?

None

Apparently, the federal government doesn't have enough problems. So a few U.S. Senators have taken it upon themselves to try and get Major League Baseball players to stop using chewing tobacco during this year's World Series. Senators Dick Durbin of Illinois, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Senate Health Committee Chairman Tom Harkin of Iowa recently sent a letter to Michael Weiner, the Executive Director of the MLB Players Association, asking him to tell players to stop using chewing tobacco during this year's World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.

"When players use smokeless tobacco, they endanger not only their own health, but also the health of millions of children who follow their example," the letter said. "Unfortunately, as these young fans root for their favorite team and players, they also will watch their on-field heroes use smokeless tobacco products."

Sounds like a great cause, fellas. And we know that it's the thought that counts. But, is this really the best use of your time right now? Go fix the budget or something, please. [via The Big Lead]
