The South Carolina Gamecocks were favored by 3.5 points on Saturday when they took the field in Starkville, MS to play Mississippi State. Up four points with just four seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter, SC was facing a fourth-down on their own four-yard line (were all these "fours" a sign?) when they were forced to make a big decision—punt the ball away and risk a big return or give the ball to their quarterback and let him scramble around for four seconds before throwing the ball away and ending the game?
They decided to do the latter. Except that SC QB Connor Shaw opted to run out the clock by taking the snap, turning around, and running right out of the back of the end zone as the clock expired. All good, right? It gave SC a 14-12 victory. But it also meant that all of the sports bettors out there around the world who put up a reported 40 million dollars on SC winning by more than 3.5 points lost (peep here to see how it breaks down to an estimated $30 million loss) and lost tragically.
