On Lap 11 of 200 of the IndyCar Series Finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Dan Wheldon died in a fiery 15-car crash.
Wheldon's car launched over another and hit the catch fence on Turn 2. He was airlifted from the scene and taken to University Hospital, but was announced dead by IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard. After officials cancelled the race, owners and drivers decided to have a five-lap dedication to the 33-year-old driver from Emberton, England. "Danny Boy" and "Amazing Grace" played as the tribute was completed.
The last time somebody died on track was when Paul Dana died in practice at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2006. Wheldon is survived by his wife Susie, two sons, three siblings, and his parents Clive and Susie.
Wheldon was one of the most successful drivers in recent history after winning the Indianapolis 500 twice, first in 2005, and again this year. He also took the IZOD IndyCar Series championship in 2005 with Andretti Green Racing. After driving his first race in 2002, Wheldon won 16 times of his 134 IZOD IndyCar Series races.
