Interview: How Complex Is Minnesota Timberwolves Draft Pick Derrick Williams?

We got with the second overall pick in the NBA Draft to talk about his obsession with sports and action video games, and his interest in old school kicks.

All it took was two years at Arizona to prove to the NBA and everyone watching that Derrick Williams is the real deal. As a freshman, Williams displayed glimpses of the type of next level talent he could become. Fortunately, D-Will stuck around for another year and throughout the entire season, he left NBA scouts eagerly waiting to hear him declare for the 2011 NBA Draft. Fortunately for the Minnesota Timberwolves, they were able to address their need at the power forward position and took Derrick with the second pick in yesterday's draft. 

Before his big day at the Prudential Center, we talked to Derrick at the Sean John Official NBA Pre-Draft Style Suite with Conversion Sports to see just how Complex he really is.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?
Derrick Williams: “I’m On One” by Drake, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross.

What are your favorite sneakers to wear?
Derrick Williams: I like Nikes. Air Forces, Air Max, and the Foamposites. Stuff like that. I’m more of an old school kind of guy. 

What’s the most money you ever spent on an item of clothing?
Derrick Williams: Oh man. I’d probably say my jeans. I probably spent like $350 on some jeans.

What celebrity is in your Wifey Hall of Fame?
Derrick Williams: There’s so many to name. [Laughs.] I can’t even think at this point. Probably say…[Asking the people with him] I need a name. I need a name. Who looks good? [Laughs.] Everybody’s taken right now.

Current video game obsession?
Derrick Williams: NBA 2K11 for the Xbox. I can’t wait for NBA 2K12 to come out. I was able to play the preview of the unfinished game. Call of Duty: Black Ops. I like FIFA 11 a lot. I’m big on the sports and action games.

Dream ride?
Derrick Williams: I’d say an Aston Martin.

Favorite tech product?
Derrick Williams: I have an iPhone and an iPad. So, both of those.

Who is the most famous person in your cellphone?
Derrick Williams: Kobe.

What are you going to miss most about college?
Derrick Williams: I'll probably miss the fans. And all of my teammates because you’re never going to play with that group ever again. At the same time, I had fun while I was there.
