AGE: 27 (November 6, 1976 – April 22, 2004)
CAUSE OF DEATH: Killed in combat in Afghanistan.
COMPLEX SAYS: By now, the life of Pat Tillman is the stuff of legend. An All-Pro defensive back with the Arizona Cardinals, Tillman gave up his NFL career to enlist in the Army when he was just 25, turning down a $3.6 million/3-year contract to do so. He participated in the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003, and was later redeployed to Afghanistan in 2004, where he was killed in a friendly fire incident that is a source controversy to this day.  Politics aside, the man was a true American hero.
