Sport: Baseball
Event: In an exhibition game between the Chattanooga Lookouts and the New York Yankees, 17-year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. After the game, Ruth was quoted as saying, "I don't know what's going to happen if they begin to let women in baseball. Of course, they will never make good. Why? Because they are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day."
Complex says: Less than a week after the game, commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis voided Jackie's contract, reasoning that baseball was "too strenuous" for women. To that we say: FOH.
