Yesterday, the San Diego Chargers spent their off day doing something amazing for children in need. The team took part in the area's 27th Annual Shoe Distribution, which provides elementary school students with footwear, and it was a huge success.
The majority of the team huddled up as they scoured the city to purchase enough pairs to cover all the children, bringing in more than 1,200 shoes in total, which a Chargers spokeswoman says is 200 more than the amount they gave away last year.
"This is our day off, but we all like to give back because we were all kids at some point," cornerback Jason Verrett told Chargers.com. "We wanted new shoes and I remember what that was like to get a new pair. I'm happy to come here and see them smile when they pick out any shoe in the store they'd like. It's definitely a blessing."
It sounds like the kids enjoyed themselves, too. "This was cool, and the best part was when he picked me out the fancy shoes. It makes me happy, and he is very nice," a nine-year-old fan said of rookie running back Melvin Gordon.
Whether you're a fan of the Chargers or not, there's no denying the fact that they picked up a major W here.
