A Nike Employee Showed Off One of the Most Important Pieces of the Brand's History

Nike designer Leon Witherow shares one of the brand's original running shoe lasts used to create a number of significant sneakers.

Nike designer Leon Witherow has already shown us countless Air Presto gems, and now he's taking it even further back with a look at one of Nike's original shoe lasts.

According to Witherow, this was one of the very first lasts used by Bill Bowerman in Nike's ongoing effort to create better running shoes for the late great Steve Prefontaine. Although Witherow doesn't specify which models, he mentions that the last "helped shape some of the most iconic running shoes in history." Think '70s styles like the Montreal, Waffle Racer, Cortez, and so forth.

The last is owned by Mike Friton, a designer who's had a hand in some of Nike's most famous shoes. For more information on Friton and some of the often overlooked aspects of shoe making, check out the clip below.
