With its countless styles and collaborations, the adidas Stan Smith is beginning to tread on passé territory. As noted by Another, the Stan Smith is one of the only sneakers to make the full crossover from a performance sports shoe to becoming a staple of the high-fashion set. Despite its no-frills design and relatively inexpensive retail tag, the Stan Smith has been embraced by everyone from Marc Jacobs to Phoebe Philo. And while other once-sports sneakers such as the Nike Air Force 1 and Air Jordan 1 have made their respective marks in fashion, neither are quite as commonplace as the Stan Smith. However, the tide could be turning.

In attempt to predict the next big fashion sneaker, Another has highlighted some of its top picks, although the one that really jumped out at us was the Nike Air Huarache. Not because it's a great shoe, which it is, but because its ship may have already sailed, too. Along with the Stan Smith, the Air Huarache was one of the biggest retro stories of 2014, with many U.S. sneakerheads adopting what had become a favorite amongst those in the UK. Stores couldn't seem to keep the "Triple Black" and "Pure Platinum" colorways on the shelves, igniting a monochrome runner craze that has continued this year with sneakers like the adidas Ultra Boost.

But like the Stan Smith, the Huarache is beginning to show signs of fatigue, and it feels like a odd choice for the Stan's successor. Another also names seemingly random sneakers like the ASICS GT-2000, a performance runner that was recently spotted on the feet of fashion's elite, the Nike Sock Dart, which is about as far away from the Stan Smith's minimal aesthetic as you can get, and the Common Projects Achilles, the Made in Italy Stan Smith reinterpretation that retails for around $400. CPs have been around for awhile, and their price is what makes them restrictive to the public, not their lack of notoriety.

Only time will tell if Another is onto something, but, honestly, none of these seem like very practical replacements for the most ubiquitous sneaker in fashion.
