We've covered artist FILFURY's amazing sneaker-based designs in the past, and now thanks to a new interview with Quartz, we're able to gain some insight on the process behind the digital madness.

For the UK-based designer, it all begins with pushing his imagination: "I start with the question, 'wouldn’t it be cool if…' I then look for reference pictures of the new object online. I take photographs of the shoe from several angles then jump into digitally painting the pieces together."

Then, armed with his sketchbook, camera, Google Image Search, and Photoshop, FILFURY gets to work on his mind-bending creations. However, he says he's currently giving the MacBook a break and working project that will bring these insane designs to reality as 3D sculptures.

His biggest inspirations include everyone from artists Stan Lee and Peter Saville to the man himself, Tinker Hatfield, and FILFURY's favorite sneakers are still the old classics—the Nike Air Max 1, the Air Stab, and so on.

Check out some more of FILFURY's work below and head to Quartz for the full interview.
