Last week, we reported on the story of former Nike executive Anthony Watson who left the Swoosh because of personal reasons.
Apparently, some people took umbrage, and Watson took to Twitter to clarify that his reasons were strictly personal. He claims that he found nothing wrong with Portland or Beaverton, and even commented on saying both were "wonderful cities with amazing people." Watson continued to compliment his former employer and wished Nike future success.
Watson's personal reasons, according to an anonymous source quoted by Fortune, was due to his displeasure with Portland's gay scene:
"As a single gay guy from London [he] underestimated what it would be like," the unnamed source told Fortune. "It was a culture shock. And there’s no point in having a great job if you feel unhappy with your surroundings."
So the guy didn't like his options. Instead of being miserable, he took the initiative to move on. Take a look at Watson's full statement below.
(1of2) Despite what you might read, I’ve never said I hate or dislike #Portland or #Beaverton. Both are wonderful cities with amazing people

(2 of 3) Nike is a great company, with amazing people. It’s just my personal circumstances changed.

(3 of 3) My leaving has nothing to do with Nike or any vendor. I wish Nike every success for the future. It's a wonderful company.
