When it comes to Air Jordans in the aftermarket, the average sneakerhead could probably tell you the models that perform the best. It's simple: Just start naming the most popular sneakers from 1 - XX8.
Instead of this high-level overview, what if you wanted to get into specific details about each sneaker? As much as the "limited-edition" label plays a role in the success of an Air Jordan in the aftermarket, you have to believe that colorway, which is arguably the number one factor that even attracts the attention of sneakerheads to begin with, plays a major role when it comes to resell value.
Sneaker data website Campless, founded by Josh Luber, recently examined Air Jordan colorways by their resell value after being inspired by designer Brett Golliff's story, "The 10 Most Significant Colorways in Sneaker History."
Luber's analysis looks at Air Jordan models III - XIV and assigns a weight to the color found on each sneaker to determine the resell value of the specific color. For example, the "Black/Cement" Air Jordan III has an official colorway of "Black/Cement Grey-White-Varsity Red," so based on Luber's allocation, it would break down like this: Black and Cement Grey would have a weight of 40 percent each, while White and Varsity Red would get 10 percent each.
For the sake of organization, shades of similar colors were grouped together, so instances of "Stealth" or "Anthracite" would be organized under "Black."
Based on Luber's analysis, he determined that "Black," "White," and "Red" made up the top three and accounted for two-thirds of Air Jordan resell colorways, from the III - XIV. In dollars, these three colors accounted for $41.7 million of the Air Jordan sneakers (III - XIV) resold on eBay in 2013.
