The story behind the New York Mets blue and orange color scheme is well known by now. In honor of New York's two previous National League teams, the Mets wear blue for the Dodgers and orange for the Giants.

However, it turns out that the Mets were extremely close to wearing black and pink uniforms in 1962, rather than their classic blue and orange look.

As it so happens, the team's first majority stockholder, Joan Whitney Payson, was the heiress to the famed Greentree stables. The stable's silks, designed by Payson's mother, featured pink and black striped sleeves with black caps. Apparenty, Payson was extremely superstitious and wanted to carry on her family's legacy through the expansion New York Mets.

Eventually, blue and orange were settled on and the pink and black idea was thrown out the window. However, we have some idea of what the Mets would look like if Ms. Payson had her way, as the Mets introduced a black uniform in 1998 and have sported pink bats and wristbands on Mother's Day.
