After an 0-2 start to the season, things have gotten off to a rocky start of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And it looks like that trend will continue for at least a little while longer after the NFL shattered the team’s hopes of going retro for its September 29th home game against Arizona.
Due to a new helmet rule set forth by the NFL—which states that a team must use the same helmets for the entirety of the season—the Bucs will be unable to hit the field in the retro “Bucco Bruce” helmet.
While the rule only applies to helmets, technically the Bucs would still be able wear the creamsicle uniforms. Though, the team as decided to scratch the plan all together, as, without the white helmet, the throwback look would be incomplete.
According to COO Brian Ford: "While we regret that our players will not be able to don the ‘Bucco Bruce’ helmet and traditional orange, red and white uniforms, there simply was no acceptable way to meet the requirements of the new policy while staying true to the spirit of our throwback theme. We will continue to explore options with the league office for bringing back this fan favorite in future seasons."
