Now that the minimal/barefoot approach to running sneakers has seemingly been mastered by footwear brands, it looks like the next big thing in running is energy return.

Much like adidas did earlier this year with its Boost midsole technology designed for greater energy return, Newton Running had created its own Energy running shoe.

Though it’s nothing like the adidas Energy Boost, the Newton Energy is a platform designed to help runners make the transition from conventional running sneakers to the Newton brand. After all, Newton has long had its own Action/Reaction technology designed for efficient running—that's the last thing it needs.

The shoe includes a slightly tweaked version of Newton’s unique forefoot technology. The features a groove in the forefoot for greater flexibility, while a lower-set midfoot shank bridges the gap between the heel and forefoot normally found in the traditional Newton shoe collection. The result is a smoother heel-to-toe transition, a more efficient gait cycle, and overall, a more natural stride.

The introduction of the 9-ounce Energy to the running market is a smart move by Newton, as it will allow the specialty brand to potentially reach a broader group of runners.

The shoe will be available starting July 17 at Newton.
