Eleven years to the day. It was February 28, 2002 the last time that the University of Virginia Cavaliers were able to defeat ACC powerhouse Duke. Not only that, but it was the last time UVA won against a nationally ranked top-5 team. Last night, Virginia looked to rewrite history as they hosted the Blue Devils once again in Charlottesville.
In what will be remembered as one of the most surprising ACC upsets of the year, the Cavs powered through to an impressive 73-68 victory. Thanks to suffocating defense and some outstanding shooting, Virginia was able to keep Duke from ever gaining the lead. Forward Akil Mitchell chipped in 19 points for UVA, but it was guard Joe Harris who had Sportscenter commentators buzzing Friday morning. Harris shot a lights out 12-20, putting up a season-high 36 points as Virginia rallied to their biggest win of the season. While it remains to be seen if the Virginia Cavaliers will be selected for the NCAA Tournament, last night's win was enough to make the rest of the country pay attention to the orange-and-blue.
For the third year guard's biggest game in his collegiate career, Harris chose to keep things simple with the Nike Zoom Hyperdisruptor. With a breathable Hyperfuse upper, responsive heel and forefoot Zoom Air units, and a heel cup for added stability, this model was a hit with players of all sizes. You can pick them up today for $130.
