Both teams had ample chances to take control of the game throughout, but at the blow of the final whistle, Spain barely managed to squeak past France with a 1-0 victory in Tuesday’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier between the two European heavyweights.

After a couple of early blown chances, and a missed call that could have given Spain a penalty kick, FC Barcelona man Pedro scored the lone goal in a pair of Nike Mercurial Vapor IX. France relinquished possession for a majority of the match, but had their chances to equalize even after losing a player to a double-booking in the second half.

With three games left to play for each team, today’s win puts Spain in the driver’s seat in Group I—one point ahead of Les Bleus.
