While many performance footwear brands seem to be going with a more minimal take on trail running sneakers, Mizuno is sticking to its guns (and tradition) with the Wave Ascend 8.

The latest version of the Ascend series will be back in July 2013, and it is expected to be one of the better trail running shoes of the year. Designed for runners who favor that traditional cushioning and protection, the Ascend 8 can take on whatever the backcountry throws your way.

New to the Wave Ascend is a redesigned upper for enhanced stability and support. Runners will be happy to know that the shoe keeps its AP+ midsole from the previous model. Its multi-directional lug pattern offers ground-hugging traction as you rip through the trail.

The Wave Ascend 8 should be priced around $110.
