Opening Ceremony rethinks two adidas basketball classics.

This article appears in Complex's February/March 2013 issue.

This is just the second collection that Opening Ceremony has done with adidas Originals, and the 12-year-old brand/boutique hasn’t wasted any time having its way with some of adidas’ most iconic product. OC isn’t doing anything sacrilegious, nor anything as wild as fellow Three Stripes collaborator Jeremy Scott, but it’s definitely turning familiar designs on their head.

Case in point, the adidas Crazy 8. Once the signature shoe of a young NBA star named Kobe Bryant, it’s been re-imagined by Opening Ceremony as a tennis sneaker. Velcro straps were added at the forefoot and the rear, and the all-leather upper has been painted in different wild patterns, with the Opening Ceremony logo landing as a simple emboss.

Then there’s the reworking of the EQT basketball sneaker from the mid ‘90s. Taking cues from running shoes and hikers, the EQT Trail OC features rich suede with speedlacing at the top and printed inserts that wouldn’t look out of place in the Flintstones’ wardrobe. Already a boot-like sneaker, Opening Ceremony’s EQT remix makes it more of what it seemingly wanted to be in the first place.
