BMW Has no Plans to Mix M with i

BMW's M division is famous for making some of the fastest road cars the world has ever seen, and some great race cars as well. BMW's new i division is taking the concept of hybrid technology to new places in a similar fashion. The i3 is going to be the practical and efficient hatchback of the range, and the i8 is the drool-worthy super GT that also promises incredible fuel economy.

Despite already looking like an M product, the M Division had nothing to do with the i8, and BMW Head of Technology Communications Cypselus von Frankenberg (Awesome name) said of mixing the two, "I don't think it's necessary. You look at the [i8], it's an i version. You look at the LifeDrive architecture of the car, it wouldn't make sense to bring M to that."

BMW M Head of Product Development Carsten Pries said of the other division, "I don't expect there's any type of competition, even if i8 is a sports car, it's a different kind of sports car." He also quipped that the i8's 4.4 second 0-60 time wouldn't cut it for an M car.
