Tesla CEO Elon Musk Has Promised an Affordable Electric Car

We used to take just about all of Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk's statements with a grain or twenty of salt, because they seemed like the same outlandish vaporware promises we've heard from what seems like a billion car startups, but now we more or less take him at his word. Why? Because the Model S is brilliant.

His latest promise that we won't be at all surprised to see come to fruition? An electric car for the masses. Tesla wants to make electric mainstream by concocting a rival to the Nissan leaf that will out-class it at a similar price point. In Musk's own words: “With the Model S, you have a compelling car that’s too expensive for most people, and you have the Leaf, which is cheap, but it’s not great. What the world really needs is a great, affordable electric car. I’m not going to let anything go, no matter what people offer, until I complete that mission.”

This car would have a range of around 200 miles, and be priced under $40,000, which after a $7,500 tax credit, would mean $32,500 or less. While it's not an electric car for the poor, that is just barely over the average new car price of $31,000.
