The production for this serial had very little money, so they didn't spend time converting a stock vehicle into a Batmobile. Besides, the term "Batmobile" hadn't been around very long yet, and hadn't built up the cultural cache we've known all our lives. Instead, it was a bone stock 1949 Mercury Convertible. Drop the top, and it's the Batmobile.
