Test Drive: 10 Things To Know About the 2013 Nissan Altima

The CVT Is Even More Refined

Nissan leads the auto industry in Continually Variable Transmissions, or CVTs, so for the launch of five new vehicles, a 70 percent design of the components was pretty important. For those who are unaware, a CVT virtually gets rid of fixed gears by using a metal belt that runs around two variable-diameter pulleys, traveling up the pulleys. This makes for incredibly smooth shifting. Nissan took it another huge step up by expanding to a 7.0 gear ratio range, reducing internal friction by 40 percent, and integrating better control logic.
