The 86th Indy 500 was every race official's worst nightmare. On the penultimate lap, Paul Tracy was pressuring Helio Castroneves for the lead. He made his move in turn three and completed the pass at the exact moment that a crash brought out the yellow flag. His overtake was nullified and Castroneves was declared the winner by race officials, a decision that was upheld after protests were filed by Tracy's team.
