Bobby Unser became a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, but this race would best be remembered for the soap opera drama that followed. The Monday after the race officials ruled that Unser had gained an illegal advantage by passing cars while exiting the pits and demoted him one spot, making Mario Andretti the winner. After a litany of protests and appeals, Unser's win was reinstated on October 9th.
