Mears earned his first Indy 500 win and brought Roger Penske back to victory lane. The lead up to the race was filled with turmoil as the traditional sanctioning body, USAC, was dealing with the upstart CART series that had filed a number of entries. As a result, the 1979 running ended up with an expanded field of 35 cars, two more than the standard 33.
